St. Peter Ladies celebrate National Quilting Month
Normally, the ladies from St. Peter Lutheran, Garnavillo meet monthly for 3 hours in the church basement to assemble and tie quilts for Lutheran World Relief. Tables are arranged and placed on risers to accommodate arranging or cutting blocks for tops, assembling the tops, backs and fillers, and tying the assembled quilts. "Normally there's 7 of us and we complete 6-8 quilts in the 3 hours, except for finishing the edging." But on March 17, in honor of National Quilting Month, the ladies doubled their work time and were able to assemble and tie 12 quilts. "Thrivent supported our endeavor through a Thrivent Action Team card used to purchase supplies and additional fabric for backing. Otherwise, all of the fabric used for tops, backings and the filler batting is donated for which we are very grateful." Once the quilts are assembled and tied, they are "shipped" off to church member Bev McCullough who finishes the edges. "The quilts look so nice when Bev gets finished with them," states member Jane Thein. The finished quilts are then sent to Lutheran World Relief in May and November. Ladies helping on March 17 were Dianne Uriell, Georgi Kaiser, Sue Kuenzel, Jane Thein, Joyce Schoulte and guest Pat Schroeder.
